Thumbs Up Public Speaking

The term "thumbs up" denotes a positive response. The movie critics give "two thumbs up" to a movie, and that is a positive rating. That means that the critics think that it is a good movie. Most of the time, when the term "thumbs up" is used, it is used as a rating for a performance, a book, or a movie. I say that "thumbs up" is more than a rating; it is an objective of public speaking. It is an attitude.

It is easier to say something negative than it is to say something positive about any subject you want to name. Negatives are just louder and more noticeable. Great public speakers know how to find the positive in everything. When they speak, they accent the positive (thumbs up). They don't bring their audience down (thumbs down); they pick them up and make them feel better about themselves. They might inspire them to take action. But that isn't done if the accent is on the negative.

If you want to get people to donate to or support your cause -- if you want them to give you a thumbs up -- then you make them feel better about themselves. You might say that world hunger is a shame and a disgrace, or you can say that world hunger is an opportunity for all of us to help our fellow human beings. It's the same situation, but one way of saying it is thumbs down and the other way is thumbs up.

There is an old song that says it best. The song was written by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen and recorded by Bing Crosby. The name of it is "Accentuate the Positive": "You've got to accentuate the positive; eliminate the negative; latch on to the affirmative; don't mess with Mister In-Between."

Do you hear me, hmm?
