The Terror Of Public Speaking

According to the phobia-fear-release.com website, the "Symptoms of Fear Of Public Speaking" are "breathlessness, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to think clearly, a fear of dying, becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or a full blown anxiety attack." Wow! That sounds really awful, doesn't it? Most people don't go to those extremes.

Now anybody who has a lick of sense will become a little nervous before they are required to speak publicly before any size audience on any subject. There may be a few people in this world who do not get the least bit nervous under these circumstances, but I have never personally met one -- and I don't expect to.

Mark Twain had it right when he said, "There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars." Everybody gets nervous before they have to get up in front of an audience and speak. That fear is expressed by a full 90% of people. Public speaking is probably the number one universal fear, but it doesn't have to a debilitating fear. Just because you are nervous about speaking publicly doesn't mean that you CAN'T speak publicly.

There is even a name for the fear of public speaking. That name is "glossophobia." It is estimated that about 10% of the population actually are afflicted with glossophobia -- the rest of us just get a little nervous.

It is important to realize that the fear of public speaking happens BEFORE you have to speak publicly. Once you get started on your speech, the fear usually disappears as you warm up to your subject. Adequate preparation is the best antidote for the fear of public speaking so practice, practice, practice and you will be just fine.
