The Stress Of Public Speaking I have heard that there are people who have absolutely no fear of speaking in public. I've never actually met one of these paragons of virtue personally, but I have heard that there are some people who claim that they are never even the tiniest bit anxious when they must speak in public. To quote the famous Mark Twain on the subject: "There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars." Yes, even those people who look SO cool and are standing in front of a group giving a lecture about how to overcome public speaking stress are stressed. They LOOK oh-so-calm-cool-and-collected, don't they? The good ones will confess to the group that even they feel a little stress before they must speak publicly -- even about the fear of speaking publicly. Along with such things as deep-breathing exercises and some self-hypnotism, most of these instructors that lecture about overcoming the fear of public speaking advocate three main concepts; knowledge, preparation, and practice. Knowledge: The more familiar you are with a subject, the more confident that you will feel when you speak about that topic. If you feel that you have done sufficient research, and there isn't likely to be anyone in the audience that knows more about the topic than you do, you will not be nearly as stressed. Preparation: Having your goals for your speech clearly established within your own mind and having the points that you want to make committed to paper will help to relieve much of the stress that you are feeling before you must speak publicly. Practice: There isn't any substitute and there isn't any shortcut to practice. Practice does make perfect. The more you practice your speech, the more confident you will become and the less stressful you will feel.
