Stress Busters For Public Speaking

If you feel more than a little "anxious" when you know that you are going to be required to speak publicly, you are a part of the largest majority. A full 90% of people today say that public speaking is their number one fear. They would rather have a root canal than speak in public.

Of course, just because the rest of the world is as nervous about speaking publicly as you are doesn't mean it helps matters. The point is to find ways to relieve your own fear and conquer your own public speaking demons.

The first and most important thing that you can do to help relieve the stress of public speaking is to be completely and totally prepared. If you are sure -- nay, CERTAIN -- that you know the topic, you will be much calmer than if you feel like you are going to have to improvise.

The second thing that you can do is to get organized. Organize the subject matter that you plan to speak about into a logical sequence. Write your speech so that you cover one point and then move on to the next point.

The third thing that you can do is practice. Let me repeat that -- PRACTICE. One more time…PRACTICE! Practice gives you confidence and will break the hold of stress. If you have fully rehearsed your speech, you will be considerably calmer when the time comes for you to stand up and give your speech. It will be something that you have already done on numerous occasions.

Frankly, than "clammy palm" feeling just before your speech commences can't really be avoided; so rather than avoid it, use it to your own advantage. Start your speech by laughing at yourself for being nervous. When you get the audience on your side, you have the battle half won.
