Stage Fright And Public Speaking

Stage fright! Ninety percent of people readily admit that speaking in public is their number one fear. I don't doubt that statistic. Speaking in public can be a daunting experience, but there are ways to make it easier; and although you will not ever completely overcome what we call "stage fright," you will learn how to harness those emotions and turn them into a positive force.

The key word in the term "stage fright" is "FRIGHT." Fright is not a totally bad thing. The emotion causes our body to release additional hormones like adrenalin that gives us that "fight or flight" feeling. The idea, when stage fright is the issue, is to choose the "fight" alternative. If you can harness the fear of speaking and turn into a positive force, you will become a much more effective public speaker. Adrenalin gives you more energy. It also makes you better focused and it can make you more loquacious.

The dictionary defines "loquacious" as: "Very talkative; garrulous." That "fight or flight" feeling that is produced by adrenalin doesn't always mean that you are going to have to beat somebody up. That isn't the only alternative. It also produces that feeling that you can "talk your way out of this," and isn't that what public speaking is all about?

Stage fright almost always happens BEFORE a speaker goes on stage or stands up to speak. Once the event has commenced, the speaker is fine and there isn't any fear to deal with. But that added burst of talkativeness at the beginning of a speech can be a good thing. That "fight or flight" fear can make you stand up straighter and give you an added boost of energy, as well. Stage fright can be harnessed and used to your advantage.
