Shyness And Public Speaking

Bertrand Russell said, "To conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom." Make no mistake -- shyness IS fear, and fear can be overcome. Those who are shy are afraid that they will make fools of themselves. They are afraid that others will laugh at them. Shy people are fearful of public humiliation, and while many of us who aren't nearly as shy would only become fearful if we had to make an address to an audience, those who are really shy are just that nervous in a small group.

Most of us know people who are shy, or maybe we are basically shy ourselves. The fact is that there are many very famous people who started out shy and learned to overcome the fear. You see some of those people on TV and in the movies all the time. Would you believe that Ann Margret, Bob Dylan, Brad Pitt, Carrie Underwood, Cher, Courtney Cox, David Letterman, Don Rickles, Donny Osmond, Ella Fitzgerald, and even Elvis were shy? (And that is the short list!)

Some of the most famous people in history have also had to overcome shyness; people like Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, Annie Oakley, Clara Barton, Eleanor Roosevelt, Orville Wright, Thomas Edison, Thomas Jefferson, and Ulysses S. Grant.

So, you can plainly see that being shy is not a life sentence. You can overcome shyness. Many people have -- many very, very famous people. They not only overcame shyness, but then thrived in the limelight.

Shy people are very often misunderstood. Others think that they are aloof, cold, or "stuck up" when in fact they are only shy. Volumes have been written on the subject of shyness and how to overcome shyness. There is help out there. If you are a very shy person, seek help and you might just become a famous public speaker in the process.
