Public Speaking With Sparkle

There isn't any better way to drive home a point (when it is appropriate) than with humor. People might forget a lot of things, but they do remember being entertained. They do remember laughing and they remember what made them laugh. Therefore, if you drive home the points that you are making in your speech with humor, people are more likely to remember what you said.

Past Experience Humor:

You might ask, "How do you use humor to drive home a point"? I have found that the best place to find applicable humor is in your own past experience. No matter what topic you are speaking on, if you have personal experience in the field, you have pulled some real boners or you know someone who has. The incident might not have been all that funny at the time, but it has become funny over time. It can BECOME funny when you tell it and if it is funny to you, it will most likely be funny to your audience AND they will remember the point of the funny story.

Cartoons:

The cartoon is probably the least risky of all forms of humor that you can use to make your speech sparkle. One picture really is worth those thousand words. If you can give your audience a funny cartoon to demonstrate a point, you will make them remember what the point was.

Jokes:

A joke is one of the more risky ways to insert humor into a speech. If you aren't a good joke teller, your audience will not laugh at the appropriate place. But, that said, a good joke is a great icebreaker, and it is also memorable. One of the more important things to remember about using a joke to make a speech sparkle is that the joke needs to be short, and the shorter the better. People won't hold a short joke that isn't funny against you, but they really will not have much patience with your wasting their time telling a long and involved story that was supposed to be funny but wasn't.
