Public Speaking - The Fear Factor

Samuel Clemens was a smart man. He wrote under the pen name of "Mark Twain," and he left us with some real gems about the human condition. On the subject of public speaking, Mr. Clemens said, "There are two types of public speakers: those who are afraid and those who are liars." I know that a full 90% of people say that their greatest fear is public speaking. I'm not sure whether the other 10% are liars or whether they have just overcome their fear of public speaking. No matter which way it is, the fact remains that the largest majority of us say that public speaking is our greatest fear.

When pressed, those who responded to a recent survey said that their fear of public speaking was because:

1. They were afraid they would forget what they were going to say.

2. They were afraid that they would make fools of themselves.

Well, okay. If those are the reasons why most people are so afraid of public speaking there are ways to get past those stumbling blocks.

The first and maybe the single-most important step in overcoming the fear of public speaking is to be completely prepared to give the speech. The better prepared you feel, the less nervous you will be.

The second thing to do to help you overcome the fear factor before you speak publicly is to practice some good deep-breathing exercises. Give your brain all of the oxygen that it needs and you are much less likely to forget what you had planned on saying.

The third thing that you can do to help you overcome the fear factor before you speak publicly is to take the herb Valerian. Valerian is a natural herb that is known to calm the nerves safely and effectively.
