Public Speaking Expectations

I really hate the word "speaker." It calls up images of great orators and, frankly, I just don't measure up. I try not to think of myself as a "speaker." I try to think of myself as a "teacher" or as an "instructor." Those words bring up images that I am pretty sure that I can live up to. After all, I DO know my subject, and I AM able to convey information in a clear and concise manner. I can even be funny on occasion.

The point here is that a lot of the nervousness that people feel before they are going to speak publicly is related to their OWN expectations and not the expectations of their audience. I am not suggesting that you lower your own expectations of what you can accomplish, but I am saying that if you think of yourself as a teacher or as an instructor rather than as a speaker, you will not set your expectations unattainably high.

One way of keeping your own expectations for your speech at a manageable level is to narrow your focus. Don't try to roll three speeches into one. Focus on ONE main idea and only two or three ideas that back up the main idea that you are trying to convey. You can't solve a worldwide problem, but you might change things in a single neighborhood. Focus!

Another way to keep your own expectations in check is to practice. Practice! PRACTICE! There is an old saying, "Practice makes perfect." That is an old saying that you need to take to heart. If you are prepared -- really, REALLY prepared -- your expectations will not exceed your capabilities, and you won't disappoint yourself. Success breeds success, and each time you live up to your own expectations, you will gain confidence and you will become a better public speaker.
