Public Speaking Advice Myths

One should never seek advice from an amateur -- about anything -- ever! And that goes double for public speaking advice. Look, there are REAL experts who are out there that can give you expert advice (much of it free) for the asking about all kinds of subjects including public speaking. You wouldn't ask your mother for advice about fixing your car. Why should you ask her advice about speaking in public? She doesn't do either.

Here are some myths that I have heard about the topic of overcoming the fear of public speaking over the years -- some BAD advice and myths that not only won't help, but will actually make things worse:

Picture your audience naked: Save picturing anybody naked for your dreams and then pick somebody that would look good naked. Why would you want to picture a room full of middle-aged people naked…how is THAT going to relax you? It would be exceedingly more productive to simply know your subject well.

Wear bright-colored clothing: Uh-uh! Nope, I don't think so. You want your audience to be paying attention to WHAT YOU ARE SAYING and not thinking that a psychotic monkey must have designed the shirt that you are wearing. Loud clothing is a distraction. It is a distraction for your audience, and it can even be a distraction for you. It is better to dress conservatively buy comfortably when you will be speaking in public. Don't wear anything that you will have to think about.

Move around when you speak: Negative on that one as well! If you are jumping all over the stage, your movements will detract from the words you are speaking. Large hand and arm gestures do the same thing.

The bottom line here is that if you need advice about public speaking, ask an expert!
