Powerpoint And Public Speaking

PowerPoint is good. Slides can enhance your speech. When people hear words said and see the same words in print, it enhances the learning experience. Using PowerPoint can make a speech more powerful and memorable. There are just a few things that a great many speakers who use PowerPoint could do better. Here are a few of my suggestions:

1. Those who use PowerPoint need to be sure that the font that they use is easily read. The best fonts to use are Times New Roman, Veranda, and Gothic, because they have nice, clean lines. You can use bold or italic for emphasis.

2. The font needs to be large enough. I have heard people complain that they couldn't actually read the words because the print was too small. A font size of 22-28 is usually big enough, but the size that you need to use is determined by the size of the room that you are speaking in.

3. Use bullet points rather than whole sentences. They are easier to read, as well as easier to remember. If you use blocks of print, you can be certain of one thing: nobody is going to read it.

4. Never put more than six bullet points on a single slide -- and, like many things, less really is better.

5. Keep colors as easy on the eyes as possible, but be certain that there is enough contrast between the background and the print. You don't want the audience to focus on the colors rather than what you are saying or the content of the slides, and you want the words to be easily read. Basically, use a light background with dark print or a dark background with light print, but never use black lettering on a white background.

A PowerPoint presentation can be very useful if you do it right.
