Non Panic Public Speaking

Most people -- no, make that everybody, whether they admit it or not -- gets a little anxious when they must make a speech. Some people, of course, get more anxious than others, and there are those who have full-blown panic attacks when they are confronted with having to speak publicly. Their mouths get dry, they begin to shake, their breathing becomes fast and shallow, and their heart rate increases. They might begin to sweat profusely. These folks are not just a "little nervous" about speaking in public.

Believe it or not, panic attacks, when faced with public speaking, are so common that there is actually a treatment designed for it. The treatment is called systematic desensitization. The way it works is that the patient (subject?) is instructed to do such things as stand when they are requesting that a dish be passed at the dinner table and stand in front of their family to say good morning and good night each day.

The next step in systematic desensitization is to write a speech and practice giving it alone, then in front of one person, then in front of two people (family or close friends, of course) until they are giving the same speech in front of as many as ten people. Each time the speech is given, the patient becomes more confident and with each person who as added to the "audience," the patient is becoming desensitized.

Everybody doesn't need this kind of systematic desensitization, but there are things that we can learn from the exercises that are described. The first one is to practice, practice, practice, and the second one is to practice in front of people with whom you are comfortable. These tactics will not guarantee that you won't be anxious when you must speak publicly, but they will help you to avoid a full-blown panic attack.
