Motivational public speaking is a kind of specialized version of public speaking. The point of motivational public speaking is to inspire the audience (or in some cases to incite the audience). The entire point of motivational public speaking is to move the audience from passive listening to taking action.

Most of the time, just regular, everyday, run-of-the-mill speeches are made in order to transmit information by a speaker to a group of listeners who want (or sometimes don't want) that information. But a motivational public speaker has an entirely different objective. He (or she) is not just giving information; he (or she) is inspiring the audience to do something…whatever that something is (make more sales, gain confidence, trust their coworkers…go to war). Motivational speakers intend for their audience to be changed in some way by the words that they speak, and so motivational speakers carry a larger burden than most other public speakers.

Motivational speakers must understand their audience completely. They must know where all of the buttons are located and how to push those buttons in a way that will inspire the desired action (or reaction, as the case may be). All public speakers need to know their audience so that they speak a language that the audience can relate to but motivational speakers need to really be able to hit that nail on the head.

Those who would aspire to be motivational speakers need to carefully study the great motivational speeches that have been made over time. There are some truly memorable ones -- Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech come to mind. Learn from the best in order to become the best. Learn what has motivated people of past generations, and you will know what will motivate people of this generation. Situations change, but people don't.
