Everybody gets a little nervous before they have to speak in public. Mark Twain said, "There are two types of speakers: those that are nervous and those that are liars." He had it right.

Being nervous is normal, and a full 90 percent of people say that speaking in public is the number one fear. The fear of public speaking is so common that there is even a scientific name for it. "Glossophobia" is the term that describes the fear of public speaking.

There are many different ways of overcoming the fear of speaking in public. You can take public speaking courses, for example, that will help to relieve your fear of public speaking. You can apply relaxation techniques. Just being really well prepared helps to relieve the fear of public speaking.

However, there are those who really do suffer from glossophobia and have all of the symptoms to prove it. These people are nervous to the extreme. They might sweat profusely, or be sick to their stomachs, or even faint. These kind of symptoms call for more drastic measures than being well prepared and using relaxation techniques. The people who are absolutely in a panic over public speaking can be helped to overcome it, but the measures needed are psychotherapy or hypnotherapy.

Psychotherapy is effective, but it requires counseling, and it can take anywhere from three months to several years for a person to overcome their fear of public speaking by consulting with a psychotherapist.

Hypnotherapy will provide results much quicker. This treatment requires that a qualified hypnotist perform hypnotism on the fearful person several times. There are usually between one and five sessions before results are apparent but the cost is much, much less and the time investment is as well.
