Getting A Grip For Public Speaking The kids tell each other to "get a grip," meaning to pull themselves together and take control of a situation. I think that feeling of "at the mercy of" or "out of control" is the reason why so many people are so nervous about speaking in public. There is the outright FEAR that we will forget what we were going to say and make complete fools out of ourselves right there in front of people we don't even know. There really are several things that we can do to "get a grip" when we are going to have to speak in public. The first thing to realize is that when you are nervous about making a speech, you are in one of the largest majorities on earth. A full 90% of people say that public speaking is their number one fear, so you aren't alone. The first and maybe the most important ways to "get a grip"
is to know your subject. I think Alexander Graham Bell summed it up
when he said, "There are three things to aim at in public speaking:
first, to get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself,
and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience."
This really is one of the keys of being more comfortable and feeling
like you have a grip when you must speak in public. If you are confident
that you know the subject better than any one who will be in the audience,
you will "get a grip."
