So it is a good idea to accept the fact that nervousness about speaking in public is a universal feeling. You aren't the only one. The first and foremost secret to successfully speaking in public: The NUMBER 1 RULE is to be fully prepared. There is no way I can stress this point enough. If you know your subject -- if you are fully prepared -- you may be a little nervous, but you aren't going to panic. The point of successfully speaking in public is to convey the information that is in your head to the people who are listening to you. So... The NUMBER 2 RULE is that you are only one half of a whole. It is up to you to speak, but it is up to your audience to listen politely and to make you feel welcomed and appreciated. Therefore… The NUMBER 3 RULE is: Use language that your audience understands and can appreciate. You might know a long, long list of big fancy words, but there isn't much point in using them if they go over the head of your audience. If the adjective "happy" will convey the meaning, why should you use the word "convivial"? The NUMBER 4 RULE is: Use tonal inflections in your voice. There is no quicker way to put your audience to sleep that to speak in a monotone. And the NUMBER 5 RULE is: Speak slowly and clearly, and make your points concise. It is difficult to follow a speech when the speaker's words trip over each other or when he jumps around the topic.
