Fearless Public Speaking Steps

"Making a speech" sounds a lot scarier than "giving a talk," doesn't it? "Giving a speech" brings forth the vision of standing on a stage in front of hundreds of people and speaking in a very knowledgeable way about a given subject. On the other hand, giving a talk doesn't near as frightening. The picture that comes to mind is a group of people who want to hear what we have to say about a subject that we are all mutually interested in.

So the first step to achieve fearless public speaking is to change your language from "making a speech" to "giving a talk." That language change will relieve a lot of the fear that you feel all by itself.

The next step is to write down three or four things that you hope your audience will remember when you give your talk. Make these statements very, very specific. If you are vague in your objective, you will be vague in your talk. Write down your points like this:

Point 1: The main point to remember is _______________________.

Point 2: The next point to remember is _______________________.

Point 3: The final point to remember is _______________________.

Once you have a very clear idea of the information that you want to share with your audience, the next thing to do is write down the details of the information concerning each one of the points and then to think of stories that will illustrate each major point of your talk. They do not have to be long stories, but they do have to be relevant, and one story needs to lead you to your next point.

The final step in giving a talk without feeling fearful is to practice. Practice! Practice! Practice! When you have a clear idea of what you want to say and are well prepared, you will find that the fear is a thing of the past when you give your talk.
