Common Mistakes Of Public Speaking

Public speaking is the number one fear that most people have. As a matter of fact, about 90 percent of people SAY that it is their number one fear. It doesn't have to be like that. The fear of public speaking can be overcome. The first step in overcoming the fear of public speaking is to find out what the most common mistakes are that are made by people who speak publicly and DON'T do well.

Some of the most common mistakes that those who speak in public make are often made before the speech even begins. This mistake has several parts to it:

1. They fail to know their audience. When you speak publicly, you need to know who the people are that you are speaking to and put your speech into language that they understand.

2. They fail to adequately prepare. This is more common than you might believe. If you are going to speak in public about a specific subject, you had better do your homework. You need to be comfortably familiar with the facts.

3. They fail to adequately rehearse or practice. When a speech has been prepared that is in language that the audience understands, and the speaker has done his homework and knows the material well, and then doesn't practice delivering that material in a clear and logical way, the rest of it won't matter.

Then there are the mistakes that public speakers can make while they are speaking.

1. Straying from the subject at hand. I've seen this happen a lot. Stick with your prepared statements. Don't go off on tangents.

2. Losing their place in their notes. Your notes need to be well organized and easy to read.

After a speech, public speakers can still make a big mistake if they are not adequately prepared for the questions that the audience will ask.
