Building Confidence For Public Speaking

Most people feel just plain inadequate when they are required to speak in public. They feel inadequate, and they feel unsure of themselves, and they lack confidence even when they know the subject very well. They think, "What if I forget what I am going to say?"

Sometimes they think, "What if I make a fool of myself?" Doubts creep in, and confidence goes out the window.

The best way to build your confidence for public speaking and help to alleviate your fear is to practice. PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! Practicing in front of a mirror is okay if that's the best you can do, but videotaping yourself giving the speech is the most effective way to building confidence.

I know, I know! NOBODY likes to see themselves on video tape. I don't either, and I even hate to hear my own recorded voice. We never look and sound to others like we think we look and sound to ourselves. But videotape is totally honest. It isn't going to lie to you. Your friends and family might not tell you the whole truth because they don't want to hurt your feelings, but videotape doesn't care a whit about your feelings.

When you see yourself delivering your planned speech, you can make corrections. You can see that you need to stand up straighter, or that you need to stop making such large hand gestures, or that you are saying a certain word too often or repeating yourself. You can actually become an unbiased observer of yourself making your speech, and when you know what is wrong, you can fix what is wrong.

There are many ways to build confidence for public speaking, but if you have seen and heard yourself making that speech and know that it is your best effort, that will be the biggest confidence builder of all.
