Best Speech Closings

The closing is the single most important part of any speech, no matter what the occasion or the topic. The closing is the last thing that your audience is going to hear from you, and it needs to be a strong statement that will echo in their heads for a long time to come, or it needs to be a powerful question that they will continue to search for an answer to. It can also be a call to action that leaves no doubt about what you expect your audience to do…right now.

The opening statements of a speech are second in the order of importance of speech components. The opening needs to grab the attention of the audience. The opening needs to prepare the audience for what you are about to say.

Including interesting and/or funny stories in the body of your speech is necessary to hold the interest of your audience. People will begin to nod off if all you are doing is relating facts and statistics. You must put enough human interest into a speech to keep people listening so that when you do quote facts and statistics, they are still listening.

There are three parts to a speech -- any speech -- whether you plan for the three parts or not. This is the way it is going to happen:

(1) there will be an opening statement;
(2) there will be a speech body; and
(3) there will be a closing statement.

The effectiveness of your speech will depend a great deal upon how well you mesh these three parts.

Remember this: The purpose of the opening statement is to prepare the audience for what you are about to say. The body of the speech is intended to make the points that you want to make. The closing statement is the most important part. Make it count!
