Beating The Fear Of Public Speaking I remember my dad telling me (repeatedly), "If you don't have something good to say, don't say anything at all." Now, don't get me wrong. That is excellent advice when it comes to relationships, but it isn't very good advice when you are talking about public speaking. The fact is, controversy is the heart and soul of all public speaking. If you are talking to a group of friends (i.e., making a wedding toast, teaching a Sunday school class, etc.), you are speaking to those who already agree with you. You might be a tad nervous about standing up in front of a group, but most people aren't going to panic over speaking in public to a group of people that they know and that are like-minded. Nobody is apt to disagree with what you have to say. On the other hand, a statistic that is bandied about says that the greatest fear that most people will admit to is public speaking. That's right -- 90% of people say that their greatest fear is speaking in public. Personally, I really think that the largest majority of this 90% are talking about giving a speech to a group of people whom they do not know personally and who may or may not agree with what they have to say. The best possible way to beat the fear of speaking in public, no matter what the circumstances, are is to BE PREPARED! If you know your subject….if nobody could possibly come up with a question that you couldn't answer with confidence about the subject that you are speaking about, you are not going to be excessively nervous. You can beat the fear of public speaking by simply being prepared.
