Avoiding The Fear Of Public Speaking

I am a firm believer in avoiding problems whenever the opportunity arises. It is easier to avoid a problem than it is to solve a problem. If the problem never shows up at all, is it still a problem?

You would be a member of the tiniest fraction of the general population if you WERE NOT nervous about having to speak publicly. However, there is a big difference between being a "little nervous" and being "scared to death." Fear that borders on panic is the kind that I am talking about avoiding -- and it CAN be avoided.

The first step in avoiding the fear of public speaking is to be very, very, very informed about the subject on which you are going to speak. You need to know everything that you possibly know about the subject. Knowledge is the first and best tool to help avoid the fear associated with public speaking.

The second step in avoiding the fear of public speaking is adequate preparation. Get a clear idea of the information that you want to convey in your speech and keep the focus as narrow as possible. It is much easier to become an expert on a narrow subject than a wide subject. Then when you have your subject matter narrowed down sufficiently, list the two or three main points that you want to make. Now, DETAIL those two or three points and write you speech. Preparation is the second tool to help avoid the fear associated with public speaking.

The third step in avoiding the fear of public speaking is practice. I am not talking about a little bit of practice, here. You need to practice, practice, and practice again. The more you practice, the more comfortable you will be. Practice is the third tool to help avoid the fear associated with public speaking.
