Avid Readers Are The Best Public Speakers Avid readers really are the best public speakers and they are, also, the best writers. The great speakers and writers are always avid readers, and they read a wide variety of authors and topics. Readers learn how to "turn a phrase." That is, they learn to say an ordinary thing in an interesting way that will get and hold an audience's attention. The reason that avid readers are better at this technique is that they are exposed constantly to a variety of the best authors who know just how to do that very thing. I am not implying that readers are practicing plagiarism; they wouldn't do that. But they do know that how something is said is just as important, and maybe more important, than what is being said. Readers learn how to "be descriptive." If a person is an
avid reader, they know that the ability to transport a reader to another
place or another time by using words is one of the great gifts of great
writers. It is also one of the great gifts of great public speakers.
The great ones can describe a situation so effectively that the audience
can "see it, feel it, and almost taste it"! Leaning how to
use a thesaurus isn't the same thing as learning to "be descriptive." The point here is that if you want to become an effective public speaker, you first need to become an avid reader!
