A Guide To Almost Stress - Free Public Speaking A little stress is a good thing. It is only when stress becomes debilitating that it becomes a problem. A little stress raises our level of consciousness. Adrenaline is added, and we become sharper mentally as well as physically. Sometimes that added shot of adrenaline will make us more talkative, and that can be a very good thing if the task at hand is to give a speech. So maybe the objective is not to remove ALL stress, but only to remove the excess. One of the keys to removing the stress associated with having to speak publicly is to feel like you are knowledgeable about the topic. If you feel like you know enough about the topic so that you can "hold your own" in a conversation about the subject, you will feel far less stressed. A speech is just a conversation…a one-way conversation. Study your subject. Read everything about the subject that you can get your hands on. Study until you are completely at ease discussing the topic with your friends and family. The bottom line is, do your homework. The next thing to do that will help to make you almost stress-free when you must speak publicly is to be totally and completely prepared. Know exactly what you are going to say and the exact order that you are going to say it. Write down three or four main points that you want to make and in the order that you want to make them. Then go back and fill in the details of those points. Keep everything in a logical sequence. Not only will your audience appreciate it, but it just makes it easier to remember. Practice can help to relieve the undue stress associated with speaking in public. Most of the experts tell you to practice in front of a mirror, but there is a better way. Set up your video camera with a shot that is wide enough that your whole body will be visible, and videotape yourself giving the speech. You will see if you are speaking too fast or if you are making arm gestures that are too expansive. You will see if you are standing up straight and whether you are saying "uh" too many times.
