Stress Management In The Work Place - How To Cool Down Without Leaving The Office While the best way to let off steam is to leave the scene of the crime – your office or work place, in this case – for the time being, this option is sometimes impossible to take. If that happens to be the case this time, there are other things you can do to de-stress yourself and regain your focus and concentration at work. Learn How to Breathe Properly Yes, the simple act of inhaling and exhaling can do wonders to your overworked mind and body. People in a panic tend to panic more simply because they’re breathing irregularly. If you make a conscious effort to slow your breathing, you’ll soon realize that things just aren’t as bad as they seem. Find the Perfect Outlet for Your Stress A stress outlet can be anything and anyone in this world. It can be a stress ball that you could squeeze and squeeze while picturing it’s your boss’s neck that you’re wrangling. It can be a secret blog that you keep and where you can write your innermost thoughts. It can be the simple act of confiding to your partner who magically makes things feel all right. Your stress outlet must be something that’s easily accessible from the workplace, poses no harm to anyone or anything, won’t cost you much – or any – money, and something that you can use as many times as you wish. Think of a Happy Image Never underestimate the power of visualization, as it can quickly replace your raging and tense emotions with peaceful and pleasant feelings. First, think of an image or scene where you can be very happy. Make it more vivid and detailed then commit everything to memory. Whenever you feel stressed, make yourself recall the image and imagine yourself living in it. Let yourself dwell for as long as you need on those imagined happy moments until your stress levels return to normal. Start Counting Sheep Sheep counting is not for sleep inducement alone. It can also be used to make the stress leave your body. Count slowly and continue counting until you’re sufficiently relaxed or drowsy. If sheep don’t work, you can always count whatever catches your fancy. Put Yourself in Their Shoes This may take a leap of your imagination in certain circumstances, but it’s thoroughly effective in managing your stress but also in helping you see the opposing party or issue in a better light. When you put yourself in the other person’s shoes, you’ll realize afterward that what they’ve done may not be excusable but it’s certainly understandable. When you realize that, you’ll consequently realize there’s nothing to stress about after all. Sleep It Off When nothing else works, getting some shuteye can help you put things in perspective. Close the door to your office, shut the lights, then make yourself comfy in your office couch and sleep. Things always look better when you’ve had a restful sleep. If it doesn’t, maybe you need more than a quick nap. Consider going home early and catching a good night’s sleep. Force yourself not to think about anything but just concentrate on sleeping. Although stress is a psychological factor, it does have physical and
mental effects which you may not be able to afford to experience at
work. Whenever you experience stress, just remember the old proverb:
when there’s a will, there’s a way. It’s simple, but
effective! |
