Signs Of Depression Depression is not cured by simply pretending it's not there and hoping that it will pass over time. There are telltale signs that family members should look out for, especially when the subject is exhibiting abnormal behavior. This might be regarded as nonsense at first but when the signs begin to have a life of their own, the problems will most certainly follow. Acknowledging that a family member or a friend is going through a state of depression and finding ways to help them come out of it could save his or her life. You don't need to step in and solve all his or her problems. Simply showing the person that you're there to stand by him or her is often enough. Of course, if the problem requires more than a willing ear, consulting a professional for the appropriate therepeutic steps is always an option. Here are the signs and symptoms of severe depression. A person with depression usually refuses to mingle with other people. This person might lock himself in his own room for days and avoids having to talk to anybody, even his immediate family. This person could also be withdrawn, and even doesn’t answer when being talked to. You will find him seemingly content to be by himself for days. A person with depression doesn’t seem to enjoy what he used to like doing. If he used to like to go out with his friends or read a book by himself, these all change the minute he becomes feeling blue and depressed. There might be times when he doesn’t engage in any activity at all. Depressed persons are often found staring off into space and disoriented. A person with depression is often irritable, moody and angry. For no reason at all, or just because he feels like it, he suddenly picks a fight with somebody else, provokes tension, or reacts negatively at the slightest approach. More often than not, the person picks a fight for the sake of activity, and not because there is a main point to the argument. A person with depression sometimes has thoughts of committing suicide. Statements like “I wish I was dead” or “I hope to die soon” are statements to be looked out for in a depressed person. Sometimes, they mumble these to themselves but, most of the time, they like to be heard. Of course, this shouldn't be confused with drama kings and queens who just want to get attention. Besides that, knowing if somebody is prone to suicide is also tricky, as statistics show that majority of those who have done so had not shown any indication of their plans. A person with depression draws attention to himself. Sometimes, he cries loudly or wails loudly. This is a sign that he wants to be heard, and that he feels lonely by himself. He also often gets himself in trouble at school, at work, or even with the law. Whenever you encounter people that exhibit signs of depression, it
is best that you first take a step back to assess the situation and
listen. Plunging head-on into the matter and forcing yourself to be
heard will not make the depression much worse. There are why's to depressive
states and it is only wise to find out what bothers him first before
being all-knowing and offering unsolicited advice. Just give a good
shoulder to cry on and assure him that whatever it is he is thinking
you are there to offer support. |
