Online Counseling For Depression

If you suffer from depression, or someone that you love suffers from depression, counseling is needed, even if an antidepressant is prescribed by a medical doctor. Failing to seek counseling for depression -- despite the use of medication -- only guarantees that the depression will recur. For many, however, traditional counseling may not be a feasible solution.

People have many reasons for not seeking out counseling. Often, they think that it costs too much. With online counseling, you will most likely find that the cost is much lower than traditional counseling, however. People also worry about protecting their privacy. They fear that someone that they know might see them entering a therapist's office. With online counseling, that is not an issue at all. You don't have to leave your home.

Some people have issues that prevent them from leaving home to attend counseling sessions. Again, online counseling offers a feasible solution to this problem. Other people simply don't have time in their schedules to visit a counselor. With online counseling, scheduling can often be more flexible.

Does online counseling for depression work? Those who have participated in both offline and online counseling have seen that online counseling is just as effective as counseling that is done in person. Many feel that it is even more effective, because the patient remains in familiar surroundings (their home), they aren't worried about how they look, and in most cases aren't worried about what the counselor thinks about them. Their identity is fairly well protected. So, in some instances, online counseling is more effective than traditional counseling simply because the patient is more relaxed.

There are many qualified, licensed counselors who can treat depression in an online environment. Communication with the client can be done with email, instant messenger, chat rooms, or voice chat. Most online counselors offer a variety of communication choices for the client, and most do accept insurance as well.
