The Benefits Of Learning Body Language

Body language refers to non-verbal communication that uses facial expressions, gestures, movements, mannerisms, and poses to get the message across.

People socialize and communicate with each other through verbal and written communication. However, words are often inadequate to communicate certain things like emotions and thoughts. This is where body language plays an important role. It is specifically designed to effectively express feelings.

Body language usually occurs unconsciously. Learning how to use it and being aware of the message that people might get in a certain gesture is important to prevent misunderstanding. Body language is often stronger than words. People react more to body movements because they are clear indicators of feelings and emotions. Body language cannot be faked. It is for this reason that people need to be cautious on how their body reacts when conversing; this often determines the success of communication.

One of the benefits of body language is that it can be used to get difficult messages across without having to use harsh words. For example, when a person does not like another person, it is very difficult to say it directly. But it is easier to do it with body language. The great thing about it is that body language can be interpreted easily, people know what they mean exactly, and they react accordingly.

Here are some examples of the body languages that are frequently used:

1. Eye Contact – It plays an important role when dealing with other people. When good eye contact is maintained, it symbolizes interest about the person’s thoughts. It gives genuine warmth and comfort that encourages people to be more open and honest about their feelings. In addition, it symbolizes truthfulness. People who talk and maintain eye contact are perceived to be honest in what they are saying.

2. Posture – Right posture makes a person feel good. Slouching is interpreted as nervousness or lack of self-confidence. When dealing with people, make it a habit to keep the back straight. It represents assurance and certainty. This benefits applicants by letting the interviewer know that they are competent and well deserving of any position.

3. Head position – This can be used differently depending on the mood a person would like to project. To appear authoritative, just level the head vertically and horizontally; you can expect people to pay attention immediately. When engage in a friendly or informal conversation, tilt the head a little to one side and on the next side when the conversation shifts to a different point.

4. Arm position – This is used to show how receptive or open a person is when communicating. To appear confident, just put both hands on the side of the body or at the back. People who do not move their hands away from their bodies frequently are those who are very shy or extremely quiet. When talking to a prospective client, it is suggested to use the arms to create natural movements. Arms can also be handy tools to show disapproval. Just cross them when presented with unacceptable ideas and expect people to understand the message without saying a word or without being rude.

5. Leg position – Do not move the legs around too often. This symbolizes nervousness, deceptiveness, and stress.

Body language, when used appropriately, can help a person to communicate beyond words. Learning how to use them appropriately will take the communication to the next level and achieve understanding, without the need to find appropriate words to express feelings and emotions.
