In a world that is full of modern gadgets, innovative technology and new inventions, human race has also adapted itself to the dynamic changes in the society. Humans have learned to use computers, laptops, internets, etc., and have even adjusted well enough to make these new technologies almost a normal part of their daily living.

Thanks to the new technologies that have been sprouting every now and then, a lot of traditional things, jobs and processes have been replaced by technological ones. One of the traditional things that have been attempted to replace is the process of psychotherapy.

Usually, when people have problems pertaining to emotions, behaviors, phobias, etc., they are usually referred to see a psychologist or psychiatrist. However, due to the availability of new technologies and inventions, traditional psychotherapy methods have been challenged by the emergence of virtual reality therapy.

What Is Virtual Reality Therapy?

In virtual reality therapy, the cures to certain emotional or psychological problems are said to be computer-generated. Countries from all over the world have tried to use virtual reality therapy to cure phobias and other sicknesses and disturbances brought about by psychological and emotional anguish. Virtual reality therapy has even cured people who have been suffering from eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Vices and other substance abuse related disorders are also said to be capable of being cured virtually.

How Is Virtual Reality Therapy Done?

People who choose to try virtual reality therapy are asked to put on a helmet or some kind of similar head gear to block out the real world. In turn, the patient would find himself in a “new” world provided by a computer-generated television screen. The patient has the opportunity to be exposed to the computer-generated sights and sounds from the screen. An earphone is provided to further enhance the patient’s virtual reality experience. Gloves and joysticks are also provided so that patients undergoing virtual reality can still control and participate in virtual and computer-generated situations.

Virtual reality therapy is already becoming to popular nowadays because people appreciate how fantasy can actually make them function better in reality. Not only is virtual reality therapy a new and innovative way for people to get over their fears and phobias, it is also considered by many to be effective.

Although extensive studies and research may still be needed to fully support the effectiveness of virtual reality therapy, a lot of people from all over the world are already finding out for themselves how fun and effective virtual reality therapies can be.
