The Thrill Of Learning A Foreign Language Learning a foreign language can be the most exhilarating experience and through all the tongue twists and seemingly never-before blend of consonants, you just can’t wait for the new discovery. There are more things that you can learn from a foreign language than just letters, words, and sentences. Foreign language is an art and a lifestyle. You will find that you appreciate cultures and traditions of other nations even with just a few words. There are some people who are gifted at learning languages and can easily initiate a good conversation. Some of us may have had horrifying experiences of learning a new language in class and have turned into laughingstocks, just because our tongues just couldn't pronounce those ultra long German words. Whatever your experiences or reasons for learning a foreign language are, no doubt there is thrill and excitement in it. What's more, knowing how to speak in another tongue actually makes you appear more intelligent and sophisticated (now who wouldn't want that?). Learning a foreign language makes you appreciate culture. You may be surprised how one commonly used word in one country becomes significantly grotesque or immoral in another. You will learn to understand why some foreigners speak English a certain way, like the way the Japanese use R for L, because of the standard sentence constructions in their language. Culture diversity is very interesting, as language is one of the biggest barriers to effective communication. By learning a foreign language, it is inevitable that the culture of the foreign countries using that language becomes embedded in you, as well. You will no longer be ignorant and will most likely relate with foreigners on a better level. Communication is the outlet of ideas. As some individuals tend to stereotype foreigners according to their attitudes and ways of thinking, you will learn why some foreigners act or think a particular way because you are able to decipher their manners of speech. It is a myth that only foreign nations argue because they differ in thoughts and ideas. In fact, people in the same nation and who speak the same language launch into debates and arguments everyday. Speech is a basic human function; and when ideas are created, communication becomes the method of delivery. Most people want to learn a foreign language for very simple reasons, one of which is to be called cultured and sophisticated. A lot of young people enrol in Spanish, German, or French classes because it makes them sound elegant and tasteful. How they would be able to use these new languages is unclear, but for the time being what is important to them is that people know they speak so and so. Indeed, it makes you appear more informed and intelligent. People usually look up to people who speak more than one language, because they believe that such persons are very well-traveled and educated. Thus, if you want to step up your social or business status, you might want to enrol yourself in a few French courses during your free time. But apart from knowing that you're being envied by some, knowing how
to speak a foreign language makes you a person of the world. It widens
your horizons and makes you feel more confident about meeting new people,
especially foreigners. The time you spend learning and memorizing foreign
words are nothing compared to the fun you have once you start mingling
with people of other cultures. |
