The Art Of Taking Exams

Throughout our entire life, we are destined to take various exams. We must take a test before entering school, to remain in school, to be granted a scholarship, to graduate from school, to acquire a driver’s license, to be accepted in a job, to be allowed to marry, to be promoted within our office, to be able to migrate, and to be allowed to do many other things in life. This makes it essential to prepare well and know how to take examinations.

Don’t cram. Speaking from the vantage point of the neurologists, information cannot be crammed into our brain cells a night before the examinations. Weeks before the examinations, we must divide the lessons that we are supposed to study into several, equal or nearly equal, parts. This is similar to the way we would do it with the contents of our refrigerator. We make a plan of the meals for a week and come up with healthy, palatable combinations that are just enough for what our stomach can handle. We do not eat all the food one night before we go to the grocery store again.

Eat well, sleep well. The night before the examinations, or actually the entire time we are preparing for the D-Day, we should be maintaining good physical and emotional condition. Eating and sleeping well are necessary actions. After all, we cannot take an exam if we are absent due to an illness.

Take notice of the time. Time management is especially important for ability exams with little time allotment for each number. For such tests, the key is to plan how much time must be fixed for each number. Remain focused and quick in answering. Do not waste time in asking the proctors about petty typographical errors, or about how cold or hot it is in the testing room. If an item is too difficult to answer for the meantime, mark it and answer later; but do not get confused with the numbering.

Practice. Even if it is cliché, practice indeed makes perfect. Get hold of mock examinations that are sold in the bookstores and try to answer them as you would the actual test. Be aware of the errors that you make and be patient to learn more.

Follow directions. Instructions, whether verbal or written, are extremely important since they determine whether your test results will be valid. No one will probably like being disqualified for disobeying seemingly trivial directions.
