How Telecommuting Will Help You Earn More Without Working Extra Hours Before, our parents believed that the more you work, the more you earn. They assumed that devoting extra hours in work results to more money in the pocket. This conclusion was probably true during their time. Today, it is possible to earn more by maximizing the use of time. However, maximizing the use of time to earn additional income has indirect effects on other important activities in your life. If you are currently employed, you devote regular eight hours for work; and the remaining sixteen hours is allocated for other activities. If you want to add more time for work, you have to subtract time from the sixteen hours allocated for other activities. Trouble on limited time does not stop there. You have to consider certain activities that simply cannot be cut short, like travel time to and from work. An increase in work time means a corresponding decrease in time spent for family and nurturing one’s self. It is a pity that time devoted for the family and one’s self is already down to its minimum. It is also common that time allocated for rest or sleep is sacrificed to enable you to work extra hours and earn extra income. Daily overtime work will entail sacrificing much of your sleeping time. The result is not advisable. It will adversely affect your physical well being and the quality of office work. With your performance in question, your job might be in jeopardy. Reflecting on all the effects of doing more work to earn more, the only advantage you will get is more money in your pocket – a short-term advantage. The disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. The disadvantages include poor physical health and low quality work performance. Also, the disadvantages affect both you and your employer. There is a better solution to earn more without sacrificing personal and family time. Studies reveal that a typical employee spends 60-80% of his time doing quality work and wastes an average of 30% for personal or time-killing activities. Converting the 30% unproductive time will increase work output and will minimize the need for overtime. In other words, the company you work for must turn their eyes to result-oriented output rather than time dependent performance. Some companies adopt this policy by encouraging their employees to telecommute. Telecommuting allows employees to do work within the confines of their homes. Employees are evaluated based on the outputs submitted and not the time spent in the office. Working at home means employees are more relaxed and hence, more productive. Rather than spending hours commuting and enduring traffic, an employee can just switch on his computer at home and start working right away. He is more likely productive, as stress is minimized. Look at the numerous benefits that can be derived: a. Decreased commuting time Since there is no need for overtime pay, your employer can divert these savings to increase the salaries of employees and reinvest proceeds in expanding the company. There are countless benefits that can be realized once this system is put in place. The nature of work in the information age supports the structure that
allows telecommuting to thrive. Interconnectivity via the internet makes
telecommuting possible. It would be a welcome change for the benefit
of all. |
