How To Cope Up With Difficulties In Life How do you address difficulties in life? Difficulties are part of life. All of us encounter difficulties every once in a while. Challenges are temporary and make life more exciting. Difficulties exist in order for us to be able to appreciate victories and savor the sweetness of triumph every time we cross the line to success. Challenges come in varying degrees. Some difficulties can be considered minor and are part of day-to-day occurrences. These types of challenges can be easily solved, though these are considered irritants, since you have to go through the entire process of solving the issue. There are major difficulties that may crush you emotionally. These can be devastating enough to make you feel you have been stepped on and to make you think that there seems to be no solution ahead. Dilemmas involving finances and relationships are just two of the popular and common concerns. A number of factors can be cited as causes of difficulties. Sometimes, these problems can be traced within the person, which is manageable. Other times, difficulties occur beyond your control. There isn’t much you could do to stop its onslaught. The next best thing to do is to find answers to neutralize them. Major difficulties may cloud your ability to think clearly, and thoughts can go haywire. At times like this, where do you run to and seek advice in times of difficulty? Take heed. A number of people are available to help you. You can approach any of the following: a. Family members - who are always there to comfort and guide you.
This includes parents, grandparents, spouses, relatives, and other members
of extended family. What if, after seeking advice from all these people, you still do not feel contented with the solutions they suggested? How will you overcome difficulties confronting you? There is only one alternative left – to help your own self. Now, you may ask, “How can this be possible when I can’t even think straight?” This requires self-control and discipline. In making a decision, list all available options. Have the discipline to list the advantages and disadvantages in each of the listed options. Count the pluses and minuses and evaluate the alternatives. Consider the option with more listed advantages. Try to attain a higher level of objectivity while doing this activity. Achieving objectivity requires skill. This may require you to take the role of the third party. Detach and distance yourself from the issue. Imagine that the difficulty involves another person. Act as an observer and a counselor to yourself. Picture that you are having a discussion with yourself. Imagine yourself finding a solution to your own difficulty. By assuming the role of a third party, you are virtually taking an objective stance to be able to think straight. Run a dialogue with yourself and try to find a solution to your difficulty. Discuss with yourself the possibilities, the pros and cons. This may initially sound crazy, but you will never know the result
unless you give it a try. Whenever you are confronted with difficulties
in life, keep in mind that there are people around you who can extend
a helping hand. Help is always available. |
