Ideal Qualities Of A Leader

To decide to become a leader is the first step to really stepping up to the plate and taking charge. One common denominator to all "How to be a good leader" lists, though, is that you should be responsible not just over yourself and your close subordinates, but your environment, as well. This is what is called being socially responsible. How one defines a leader depends on what you need and what the situation calls for. But, for the purpose of discussion, below are some of the basic qualities any leader at any time should have.

A leader should have character. Character is what determines who we are and how we respond to the things around us. A leader that has a lot of character is not easily swayed by influences, not intimidated by sudden changes. In addition, a strong and stable character also invites a greater level of respect from other people.

A leader should have charisma. Charisma does not just refer to how you deal with yourself, but also to how you handle other people. When you deal with other people with gratitude, empathy, or care, then that speaks a lot about you as a leader. In fact, it makes your followers want to follow you more.

A leader should have commitment. How can you trust a leader who only speaks his words but doesn’t act on them? A leader should stay true to his word. When he says he’ll do this at this time and at this place, then everything should push through. By sticking to your word, your subordinates will see that you are someone they can rely on and trust.

A leader should have excellent communication skills. You want a leader who is transparent, right? You want to know how he feels about this situation and what to do about it. You want a leader who is able to relay the correct and right solutions and the right messages. A leader who knows his way around words will be able to convince people more easily. Conversely, a leader who keeps winding and beating around the bush will not likely get the team anywhere anytime soon.

A leader should have courage. Handling a group of people is a challenge. Thus, a leader must know when to keep pushing when necessary, and when to back down when the situation calls for it. A strong leader is an effective leader. When you are not afraid to take risks, you're expanding your opportunity to learn outside your box and to think of novel ways to tackle a problem. The courageous leaders knows that the most used way is not always the best path toward accomplishment.

A leader should have discernment. A leader should be able to discern the right decision from the wrong one. This is one of the indispensable qualities of a leader that shouldn’t be taken for granted. A leader should know the difference between right and wrong. If the demarcation line between the two is a blur, then the leader must be able to think of the best course of action available.

A leader should have focus. There should be an objective, a set mission, and a vision to his leadership. A true leader knows of only one objective, and this he will exercise while he drives his team through a series of problems and challenges with flying colors.
