Finding The Courage To Effectively Lead

Challenges and struggles are part of the everyday routine for most of us. In fact, stressors seem to pile on top of each other that it becomes difficult to choose which to prioritize and face first, much more develop the courage to tackle all of them without breaking down. There are times when you feel you want to give up or even start something new, because you feel indifferent and afraid. It is this escapist mechanism that is downfall of many leaders.

Mustering the courage to weather problems and lead a team to success is, perhaps, the hardest to develop among the key characteristics of a good leader. However, one must realize that regardless whether you are in a top position or simply a follower, courage is the key attribute that will see you through every single day of your life. It sounds easier said than done; but getting out of your comfort zone, though nerve-wracking at first, is the best way for you to learn something new and become a better and stronger person.

How do we develop courage? How do we face up to those circumstances and situations that we dread?

First, you must realize and acknowledge that majority of your fears are in just in your head. Dwelling on 'what ifs' and 'what could be's' will not only make you afraid of making a move; it will also keep you in the same position, without any improvement.

Developing courage is an inward battle -- that is, it begins with yourself. Once you have resolved to set your theories of failure aside, the easier it will be for you to start taking the reins.

Courage is not the absence of fear. It deals with principle, not just perception. If you don't have the conviction to do what it takes to achieve a certain goal for you and your team, then it's not likely that you'll be a hundred percent effective as a leader. Conversely, courage doesn't mean having too much confidence in everything. It entails a calculating, but not paranoid, mind; because, after all, your team depends on you for leadership.

Thus, whenever you sense a challenge coming your way, see it as an opportunity to learn something new and make the current situation a lot better. Just because it looks difficult, it doesn't mean it actually is. Think of it this way: when life gives you lemons, then you must make the sweetest lemonade out of them. Remember, your life expands in proportion to your courage. After all, whoever said the road to success is paved with candies and roses?
