Work On That Subtle Universal Language!

The universal language is none other than the language of the human body. It’s the best way of getting your message across, without needing to express yourself in words.

Intuition works because we respond to body language. Sometimes, you just can’t explain why don’t trust someone, or you’re sure a friend is up to something. This is because you figure things out according to the signals given out from the other person’s body language.

I’ll go into detail as we move along:

Start with your face. How can you tell, by simply looking, that someone just had a tooth taken out? How do you know if a person is on cloud nine? How do you when someone is having a bad dream? You see it, right? It’s the look on that person’s face. So, how do you make sure you project your best? It’s simple. Just smile. It gives an aura of trust.

Let’s go over to your eyes. Looking intently at someone could mean you’re attracted to or familiar with that person. Looking down or barely making eye contact could mean you’re shy, or you’re just outright not interested. The best use of your eyes is seen when you look at someone straight in the eye because it always goes to show you mean what you say.

Then there’s the touch. Your hands play a very important role in comforting other people, or doing the exact opposite. For example, a warm pat on the back always gives the feeling of deep concern; or it could mean that someone is congratulating you for a job well done. Putting your arm around someone’s shoulder is just as good as saying, “I’m here to cheer you up”.

As much as your hands could show intimacy, it could also show the opposite. For instance, shoving a person away indicates annoyance or anger. Don’t make too much hand gestures because it just shows that you feel tensed or insecure.

That leaves me to my last point - your posture. It’s the way you move, stand or behave in different situations, and with different people. Why do you need to keep your posture upright, hold your head high, and avoid slouching? How do you carry yourself in public? Try to picture this: You are in a seminar and you find yourself leaning back against the chair. Some might have the interpretation that you find the talk boring and not worth your time.

How about when you’re in front of a group of seemingly arrogant people? You puff up and keep some distance. When you lean in, it means you’re interested. When you’re ashamed, you suddenly develop stoop shoulders. Your posture shows your state of mind, if you’re confident or not. So when you want to keep your poise and ace that job, all you have to do is show them that you're sure of yourself. If you're nervous and anxious, keep it to yourself. Be confident. Relax. Don't stoop.

We understand people from different countries through hand gestures and facial expressions. Understanding other tongues doesn’t necessarily require the ability to speak.

Silence is a way of speaking through your body language. It sometimes explains why you seem to be saying so much more when you’re simply “speechless.”
