You would be amazed at the number of people who work traditional jobs and who want to freelance. Unfortunately, not everybody has what it takes to freelance, and many people jump into it without stopping to consider whether they have what it takes or not. More often than not, they find themselves back at their traditional job in less than a year, and often with a great deal of debt on their shoulders.

So, before you quit your traditional job, you need to know exactly what it takes to become a freelancer. Breaking into freelancing isn't that hard, if you know how to do it — but even so, you still may not have what it takes to be successful for the long term.

The first thing a successful freelancer needs is a marketable skill. Now, it is true that just about any skill can be turned into a freelance business, but you need to understand what the demand is for that skill, how much it pays, if other people are doing it successfully, and
whether or not you have the experience in that skill that your potential clients will require. If so, you can move onto the next consideration. If not, keep your traditional job for the time being, and work on honing marketable freelance skills.

The next thing that a freelancer must have is drive, ambition, and discipline. Right now, you roll out of bed when the alarm goes off, and you rush off to work because you have bills to pay. Freelancers also have bills to pay, and they have to be disciplined enough to get work done in an environment that really isn't conducive to work — at their house. There are an incredible number of distractions, and you must be disciplined enough to ignore those distractions.

If you have these things, you can be a success. All you need to do is to get yourself prepared to leave your job and start freelancing, from a financial standpoint. If you don't, you need to rethink your desire to freelance, and work towards acquiring the characteristics needed for a freelance life.
