Support For Freelancers

Freelancing is a lonely gig. A freelancer can literally go weeks without talking to another soul outside of their immediate family members, if they have any, and it can get very lonely. Freelancers are literally "on their own." They cannot discuss problems on the job with other employees, because there aren't any. Luckily, there is support for freelancers; you just have to know where to find it.

On the Internet, forums and chat rooms for home-based workers can be found in abundance. Nobody will understand the trials and tribulations of working from home like they will, and unlike your other non-work-at-home friends, they will actually understand that you do in fact have a job, and that you are working. They are also working, so you won't have to worry about them sucking up your time. You can meet other freelancers, and arrange "coffee breaks" so that you can have real, adult conversation at some point during your workday.

Another option is to find forums and chat rooms that are specific to your field. Such places exist for writers, programmers, designers, accountants, project managers, and more on the Internet. This not only gives you the opportunity to meet new people, but there are more benefits to be had from developing relationships in these places.

First, this gives you an endless rooster of other freelancers in your field. This means that when you have overflow work, finding someone to help you out won't be a problem. It also puts you in a position to collect their overflow work when you need more than you have.

This also gives you the opportunity to discuss work-related problems with other people who are in the know — just as you would with coworkers at a traditional job. As freelancers in your field, they understand the problems, including how to deal with difficult clients, how to collect payment from clients who are slow about paying, and of course how to deal with problems related to the actual work.

You may work on your own — but this doesn't mean that you don't need the friendship and support of others. Take full advantage of the virtually unlimited online resources that are at your disposal.
