Freelancing is great, and it is something that numerous people want to do. Unfortunately, few people who take a chance on freelancing are truly prepared for it. Typically, within a few weeks or months, they are working at a traditional job once again, having failed at freelancing.

Ideally, you will start freelancing while you still have a traditional job, and take the time to build up a healthy list of clients. This way, you can make the transition between a traditional job and freelancing with ease, without completely cutting off your income for an undetermined amount of time.

This means that you will be working at your traditional job during your regular work hours, but that you will be freelancing in the evenings, on weekends, on holidays, on vacations, and in some cases, even on your lunch hour. You'll have to work double time to build up your freelancing business to the point where you can realistically — safely — leave your traditional job.

Second, if you want to be a successful freelancer, you need some money in the bank. You need three to six months worth of living expenses in a savings account. You can fall back on these savings when times are lean — and it is important that you replace any money you've taken out of your savings once things pick up again.

This savings account can mean the difference between sticking with your freelancing, or returning to a traditional job. You must also consider health, life, and disability insurance coverage, and make sure that you can swing these on your own, before you leave your traditional job.

It is important that you think things through before you make the transition from a traditional job to freelancing. You need to consider your income, insurance, taxes, retirement, and much more. Make sure that you carefully think it over, and that you have all contingencies covered.
