Freelancing is wonderful — but it can quickly turn into a nightmare at your home if you don't have the space you need to work. The fact is that working from home has become the new American Dream. But it is work, and being at home is really not conducive to work. You have to create an environment that encourages work.

This is done by moving your home office off of the kitchen table, and into an actual room. This may be a spare bedroom, an attic, a garage, or even a portable building on your property. The key is to have a workspace and a living space, and to never let the two overlap.

Your workspace needs to be set up in a way that is comfortable, but where work will still get done — with few or no distractions. For example, many people put televisions and stereos in their home offices. If these things are going to distract you from your work, don't allow them in your office. Keep the office as professional and business-like as possible.

If you are just starting out as a freelancer, you may not have any viable workspace just yet. It could be that you have to work for the money to furnish a home office or to possibly build a home office. If this is the case, note that you don't have to own the best office furniture in the world to establish a home office. If you don't have the space — or you think that you don't have the space — for an office, take another look.

You can do numerous things to create space. You can buy room dividers and create your own cubbyhole in a corner of the living room, the kitchen, or a bedroom. You can ask children to share a bedroom, and use one of their rooms as an office. Do your best to carve out workspace, until you can afford to actually build an office onto your home.

Having viable workspace is essential to your success as a freelancer. You need a place where you won't be disturbed, where you won't be distracted — and of course, where you can actually accomplish your work.
