Children are the reason why many people become freelancers. Traditional jobs do not allow you to spend time with your children. If your child becomes sick, you have to take an unpaid day off from work. You also have to pay for child care so that you can work. We've all seen the advertisements for work-at-home moms, and these advertisements are very tempting, because moms really do want to stay home with their children, but often can't because of finances — or love of a career.

Many parents can see themselves freelancing. They have visions of John-John playing under President Kennedy's desk in the oval office, and can see their own children quietly playing on the floor in their home office. Unfortunately, this is just a dream, and freelancing with children is not easy.

People who freelance successfully with children have to learn how to work around their children's schedule. They will often limit working hours to coincide with school hours and the children's bedtime. This works well for many freelancers — but not for all of them.

Even if your purpose for freelancing is to be home with the children, it is a good idea to put the children into day care for at least half of the day. This makes it more affordable, and it gives you the peace and quiet that you need to work — while giving the child the socialization that they need.

There are also alternatives to day care. For example, the child could spend time with a grandparent or other relative two or three days each week, and be home with the parent the other days. There are also Mother's Day Out programs available through numerous churches and community organizations. These are extremely cheap, and allow you to get work done.

It may take a little time — and some trial and error — to find a routine that works for both you and your child. If you really want to be a successful freelancer, you will work to find that happy balance.
