The freelance life is one to envy, but every freelancer knows that freelancing is still, in fact, a job. As a freelancer, you are still working. You have not become financially independent, meaning that you do not have to work for a living. Freelancers work for a living.

Unfortunately, the friends and family members of freelancers don't seem to get that. When a freelancer first starts out, this is an issue that they deal with daily. Friends and family members assume that because you are home, you are available to them. They may even believe that you are working, but still feel that you are available to them simply because you are home.

Then there are those friends and family members that don't really believe that you are working. They are skeptics, and they think that you are trying something that is doomed to failure — and that in the meantime, you are available to them. Again, this is a common problem that freelancers face.

Do you live in a small town? Just wait until someone asks you what you do for a living. You tell them you are a freelancer, and they look at you like you've grown horns. They don't understand it, and like others, they don't really believe that you are doing anything at all really.

Well, it is important to realize that what others think about what you do for a living doesn't really play into your success, except in one area — they think that you are available to them, at all times. This is a problem that must be nipped in the bud as soon as possible, or you will have a hard time getting any work done at all.

Set regular working hours and days. Let friends and family members know what those hours are, and ask them not to call or visit during those hours. Next, get an answering machine for your home telephone, and have it turned on (but turned down) during your working hours. Get a phone that is used strictly for business and do not give that number out to family and friends.

It takes time, but eventually, when they see you laughing all the way to the bank, they will realize that you actually do have a job — even if that job is at home.
