The age of computers and the Internet is a wonderful thing, and nobody knows that more than freelancers. In fact, your freelancing field may be in the world of computers and the Internet. These fabulous inventions have made it possible for countless freelancers to break out of the nine-to-five molds.

So, as a freelancer, what type of software do you need? Obviously, you will need software that enables you to do your work. For example, a writer needs word processing software. A graphical designer needs graphic software. A designer may need CAD software.

But there is additional software that is not field-specific. In fact, you need three different types of software, no matter what you do. The first thing you need is accounting software. There are numerous free titles that can be found on the Internet, but ideally, you will find one that enables you to keep your financial records, and then use the data in the software to fill out tax forms electronically, such as QuickBooks. Your accounting software should also give you the ability to create, print, and send invoices.

You need an organization system. This should include a calendar, a day scheduler, project information, and client information. There are numerous web-based systems that can be used for this, and they come in quite handy. Many even allow you to store files, so you don't have to worry about losing them. Some systems even have a back office interface and a client interface, where clients can log in to download files that you have uploaded for them and check on the progress of your work. A few choices include HyperOffice, Microsoft Office Live Workspace, Base Camp, and WebEx.

Finally, if your organization system does not include hour tracking, you need software that can track hours spent on a project — if you are charging by the hour. There are numerous free time trackers available on the Internet.
