Freelance Portfolios

If you freelance, you need a portfolio. You may think that only photographers and artists need portfolios, but this simply isn't true. Graphical artists, writers, and numerous other freelance fields can make effective use of a portfolio.

Your portfolio may be a physical thing — such as a book that potential clients can look through, but in this day and age, it is important to have an online portfolio as well. An online portfolio can be set up in a variety of ways.

Even though numerous sites are set up for the purpose of allowing freelancers to set up portfolios, you really need your own domain name and website. This will be your main portfolio. If you do not know how to set this up, hire a freelance web designer or developer to help you.

Next, visit the various portfolio websites, and get signed up. Set up multiple portfolios, as this gives you a better chance of randomly getting noticed by potential clients. Look to sites such as Portfolio, Carbon Made, Folio Link, and Big Black Bag.

Keep adding to your portfolio, but use caution. Never add work that you have done for a client to your public portfolio without their express, written consent. This is very important — especially if you have signed an NDA. If the client does not want their work displayed, ask them if you can list them as a reference in your portfolio, without displaying the work.

Many clients will be agreeable to this, while some may not want their names mentioned at all. This is common in the case of a ghostwriter. Clients who have had material written for them, and put their name on the work, don't want it to be public knowledge that the work wasn't actually theirs.

Just remember that you need a portfolio — even if the portfolio can only contain samples of your work, as opposed to actual work that you have done for clients. If you have a portfolio, you will find that getting work is much easier than it was before.
