Freelance And Keep Your Day Job

Freelancing seems quite easy — once you get started — but it isn't always easy, and you may not make the income that you need from it in the beginning. This is why many beginning freelancers keep their day job.

In fact, most experts agree that if you want to break into freelancing, you need to keep your day job for some time, and freelance during the evenings, on weekends, and during paid vacation times. You may be making good money from your freelancing endeavors, however, and feel that you can forego your traditional job.

Before you quit that job, you have numerous things to consider. First and foremost, you need at least three to six months of living expenses saved up. Even though things are going well now, and you are making money from your freelancing endeavors, it is important that you understand that there will be lean times, where you will need to depend on your emergency savings.

Next, you must consider insurance and other benefits that are currently available through your traditional job. Those perks won't be there when you start freelancing full time. You will need to carry your own health, life, and disability insurance, and it is vital that you understand that there is no such thing as a paid vacation in the freelancing world.

So, until you really have your freelancing business off the ground, you are earning enough money to cover your bills, you have emergency savings, and you have your own insurance coverage lined up, it is a good idea to keep your traditional job. There is enough to do when you are freelancing full time — don't add worrying about money and health to the list.

Freelancers typically set their own hours, depending on their field. In most cases, there won't be any reason for you not to work nights and weekends. This isn't easy for some people to adjust to, but if you remind yourself that it isn't forever — that it is a means to an end — working those nights and weekends becomes much easier.
