As a freelancer, you need a way to communicate with clients. In the old days, that communication was all done by telephone or in person, and occasionally by mail. Today, there are a wide variety of other options, and you need to have all of them available for your clients. Believe it or not, your clients will appreciate being able to communicate with you at their convenience.

Obviously, you need an email address. The email address that you use should be professional, and this is easy if you have your own domain name, with web hosting services. In this case, the best thing you can do is to set up an email address that has your first name, followed by your domain name, such as yourname@yourdomain.com. As a freelancer, it is also wise to secure a .name domain name. The domain name would be www.yourname.name, and the email address would be firstname@yourname.name. Remember, however, that .com is easier for clients to remember.

Aside from email, it is also wise to have several different chat systems, such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and ICQ. There are also applications that will allow you to use just that system, to communicate with all of the people on your contact lists in the various other chat systems.

You should definitely get Skype. Skype will allow you to have voice conversations with your clients, using a microphone. You can also use Skype to make those otherwise-expensive long distance calls. With any chat system that you use, you will have the ability to send files to your clients through the system as well.

With any of these options, clients will be able to communicate easily with you — even if you aren't at your computer. As you will learn, the ability to communicate with your clients, at their convenience and at a price that you can afford, is essential.
