Are You a Freelancer or a Business Owner?

There is a great deal of confusion when it comes to freelancing and owning a business. When people ask what you do, is your response that you are a freelancer? Or is the appropriate response that you own your own business? It really just depends on how you personally want to answer the question, because in reality, you are both a freelancer and a business owner.

As a freelancer, you own a business. Your business may not have a name, other than your own. It may not be structured as a corporation. You may not have a brick-and-mortar building that customers come to, but for all intents and purposes, you own your own business because you have clients who pay you. You also most likely have expenses, and may even pay vendors for supplies or services in the course of doing work for your clients. You are a business owner.

On the other hand, you are a freelancer. You perform skills and services for clients who need them, in exchange for money. You do not punch a time clock, and you do not leave your house to go to an office each day. You are a freelancer.

So, as you can see, there is a freelancing side of your life, where you complete assignments for clients; but there is also a business side of your life, where you keep books for the money that you have earned, contact clients for potential work, hire vendors, and even deal with marketing your freelance services. For all intents and purposes, you are both a freelancer and a business owner.

So, the next time someone asks what you do for a living, you can tell them that you are a freelancer, or that you own your own business — whichever response you are the most comfortable with.
