There are two organizations that amateur and professional magicians might be members of. There is SAM (Society of American Magicians) which was founded in 1902 and IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians) which was founded in 1922.

Both of these organizations have rules and regulations that magicians must adhere to in order to remain members in good standing.

Then there are the rules for performing magic and doing magic shows that every good magician understands and abides by because they make their magic better and more entertaining.

1.They never reveal their secrets. They dont want to disappoint their audiences or make their audiences lose respect for them.

2. They never do the same trick twice in a row unless it is designed to be done like that. They lose the “surprise” effect if they do.

3. They never show a trick that they havent perfected it in private. Doing so would make them more apt to make a mistake, give away a secret or lower their self confidence which is the essence of good magic.

4. They never try to perfect too many tricks at one time. They know it is better to do a few tricks well than to do many poorly.

5. They always present their tricks in an entertaining manner. They have practiced their “patter” until it is perfect. They understand that what they say is as important as what they do.

6. They are never cocky or arrogant because they know that being so would invite their audience to challenge them.

7. They have their own style. Although they do watch and learn from other magicians they never copy tricks.

8. They are always are polite and quiet when another magician is performing and never interrupt.

9.They are always clean when they perform their shows. Particular attention is paid to their hands which are what an audience is looking at.

10.They dont make their shows too long. They dont want to bore their audiences and they know that it is always better to leave them wanting more.
