Power Of Voodoo

There are four (at least) definitions for “voodoo” in the dictionary. They are:

1.A religion practiced chiefly in Caribbean countries, especially Haiti, syncretized from Roman Catholic ritual elements and the animism and magicof slaves from West Africa, in which a supreme God rules a large pantheon of local and tutelary deities, deified ancestors, and saints,who communicate with believers in dreams, trances, and ritual possessions. Also called vodoun.
2. A charm, fetish, spell, or curse holding magic power for adherents of voodoo.
3. A practitioner, priest, or priestess of voodoo.
4. Deceptive or delusive nonsense.

The Voodoos believe inthe existence of one supreme God, a very abstract, omnipotent yet unknowable force. Below this almighty God, Spirits or Loa rule over the world’s affairs in matter of family, love, happiness, justice, health, wealth, work, the harvest or the hunt etc.

Offerings are made to the appropriate Loa to ensure success in those areas.

Each Loa has its preferred fruits or vegetables, color, number, day of the week, etc. The Loa also manifest through elements of nature such as the wind and rain, lightning and thunder, the river, the ocean, springs and lakes, the sky, the sun, certain animals, trees and stones.

Voodoo in New Orleans evolved becoming more indigenous to the city. Eventually, New Orleans Voodoo became immensely different from the purer form of Haitian Voodoo.

Tales of Voodoo curses this mystical, spiritualistic religion spawned not only fear and hysteria to New Orleans, but shrouded the Crescent City in a veil of mysticism spilled over into our folklore for over one hundred years.

The Voodoo hysteria of New Orleans lasted through the 1950’s. It left behind a trail of folklore and legend of Voodoo Queens and Root Doctors who have become ingrained in the city’s history.

For those who believe in voodoo and the power of it, a curse or a spell placed on them is of the utmost seriousness. For those who dont believe in voodoo or the power it is supposed to have, definition four (above) applies.
