Every good magician needs a capable assistant to make the magic tricks work either on stage or backstage. Sometimes these “assistants” are apparently picked from the audience at random.

Random! HA!

They were placed there to look like random choices but they are anything but chosen at random.

Historically, women have been the magician’s assistant. Bringing props on and off stage, getting used in a myriad of torture devises, dancing, and often, making the magic work while the magician gets the applause.

Many magicians wives have done their share on stage, but almost always as assistants. Doug Henning, Mark Wilson and The Great Tomsoni, Johnny Thompson, all used their wives in their acts.

Thompson’s wife started to break the mold for ladies in magic. A former actress, she refused to be another prop.

She developed her role as assistant in a character. Although still “an assistant,” her gum-chewing and eyeball rolling were as much a part of the show as Johnny’s incredible magic.
If your magic act demands an able assistant to be on stage with you, choose wisely. The right assistant can make the difference between a brilliant performance and being tossed out on your ear.

A good assistant must know the magic tricks as well as the magician doing them and must be in the right place at the right time. Look for an assistant that will be able to help with distracting the audience for that split second that you need them to look elsewhere.

Sometimes magicians assistants are behind the scene…backstage. They set up the apparatus needed for the magic tricks to be performed in the correct order, open trap doors and set off smoke bombs when needed.

I encourage anyone with an interest in magic to head to the library, learn some tricks and start amazing their friends. It is a great hobby and can even turn into a profitable career.
